SOURCE OF MATERIAL USED

The starting point was photographs, documents and - mostly - memories from Tony Eden (at Norwood from 1945 to mid-1956) and then from many ex-pupils. Of special mention, must be the First World War service documents relating to Charlie Cass; Peter Gulliver has a contact who knew where to look for them!

The list of names comes from ex-pupils but mostly from mention in The Rocket magazines held by Tony Eden. These names from The Rocket were included on the Friends Reunited web site by Tony in an effort to generate interest by anyone browsing through that web site under Norwood College.

The National Census, Records of Births, Deaths and Marriages all provided a huge amount of background information about the Cass, Prudames and other familes involved in this story and particularly for James Walter Nuttall. If you want to see one of these documents for yourself on the internet - or even buy them - then every one has a reference number within the text. The full description of a reference is usually provided at the foot of the relevant page and all references are list below. For example, ²⁴ ; looking at reference 24 below provides the information - England & Wales, Civil Registration Index: 1837-1983. District, Scarborough: Vol.9d, page 269, March Quarter,1862. There are a few internet companies providing the service - ancestry.co.uk is my favorite.

As at 2007 the latest Census that is available for public scrutiny is that of 1901; the next one, from 1911, will be available in 2012. So what will that provide? Charlie Cass was a pupil at Scarborough College but the Census will perhaps tell us a bit more about his mother and family - Charlie's father was a master at Ampleforth College. Charlie's future employer at Clifton was James Walter Nuttall and it almost certain that the Census will confirm that he, Nuttall, had relocated his school from Queen Parade to Stray Road. Regretably, no one has started an internet site for Clifton so this one about Charlie remedies that.

Putting all of the above together then gives clues for research on the internet and it is amazing just how much is there. Charlie said,
"my first view of Liverpool and Birkenhead was from an old Avro two-seater
biplane when training to be a flying officer in the Royal Flying Corps."
This turned out to be from Hooton Park and this airfield is of such importance that it is now managed by a Trust and has its own web site with many photographs.
