Exploring the internet in search of more information about the Prudames name - Charlie's mother was a Prudames - I found Looking at Filey.
Well, well, I thought seeing mention of our Norwood College web site.
And then I read, "Even if you are only vaguely interested in the PRUDAMES please visit the Norwood College site."
and
"The main focus of Tony Eden’s website is Norwood College in Harrogate but Ruth and William’s only son, Gordon William George, was largely responsible for the school’s foundation and there is a great deal of CASS family information. Tony has gone to great lengths to research Ruth’s family too and made some interesting discoveries."
The Looking at Filey web site goes on with,
"Whatever the circumstances of their meeting and courtship, about sixteen months after that census visit to Filey William married Ruth and they had a long and, it appears, happy and fulfilled life together. Eighty-five was a decent score for Ruth but William clocked up almost a decade more. Judging by some of the reminiscences of the Norwood “old boys”, they were both very much respected and loved."
....... if you do take a look at the Filey web site be aware that it sometimes
takes a few seconds to load. I have copied the text and it can be viewed here.

The Old Scardeburgans' Association has scans of the old copies of the
Scarborough College magazine, The Scardeburgian.
I have found many mentions of Charlie, and his father, in these old copies
and they can seen here along with many very interesting accounts of those far-off days.
In December,1914, Germany Navy battleships bombarded Scarborough and a special edition of the The Scardeburgian.was issued to record the events of the day, imcluding some very British, stiff upper-lip accounts and of getting priorities right:-
"We went a good way down the Golf Links valley; then on hearing that the German ships had gone we returned to the school. On the way back we stopped to examine a hole where a shell had burst. On getting back to school we found that the only damage which the bombardment caused was that Pratt had sprained his wrist, and the sausages (which had been left in the oven all the time) were found to be very much burnt!!"
"Then we sat down to our postponed breakfast, and as soon as we had had 'some of the little black things which once had been sausages' we hurried downtown; for it was time for the Cambridge Exams."
Just imagine the photographs that would have appeared from the yet-to-be-invented
smart phones. ('selfies', not burnt sausages) - and Health & Safety, "don't go any near the
bomb craters! That means you too boys!"
What is so fascinating is that one account, in the mid-summer,1909, edition
records the first flight of a powered aeroplane in Great Britain the year before,
by S.F.Cody. At that time Charlie was ten years old yet within a few years
he would be flying a fighter aircraft, a Sopwith Dolphin, over France in the Great War.

An ASTONISHING & THRILLING find!
Did you know that Norwood, the part in Tewit Well Avenue, was one, indeed the first, of the hospitals created in Harrogate during the First World War by Her Imperial Highness, the Grand Duchess George of Russia?
I have found several photographs on web sites showing the Duchess
on the steps and with "1 Tewit Well Avenue" clearly shown.
A new page has been created with lots of information
but what a pity that we never knew the history attached to the building
when we were there. Grand Duchess George of Russia.

more letters from 1912-1915 have been most generously provided by David Clay. These are well worth reading to get a better understanding of a Boarders life at Clifton around the time of the First World War. Tucked away with his father's letters, David found a newspaper cutting reporting the 1915 Annual Clifton Sports Day. 11 December,2006

In 2001 an ex-pupil told me of his visits to see Charlie in Scotton Bank Hospital;
at that time I did not have all the background information about Charlie or his mother and father so I felt it intrusive to include the words (below).
However, I think it is now appropriate to include them in the web site on the After Norwood page.

"I used to visit him at Scotton once a fortnight before he died.
He was so delighted to get any visitors at all and became very emotional at that time. He always used to advise me to find a "young lady" and get married.
He was very lonely in his old age with no relatives or close friends. He regretted not having children of his own. "I did have a little fling many years ago but she led me up the garden path and let down me down very badly." he recalled."

The publication, Musical Times, Vol. 103, No. 1435 (Sep., 1962), p. 630, apparently includes a reference to William Henry Cass. I am trying to obtain a copy but if any of you can obtain a copy I should be most grateful.

Here is a co-incidence. How often do you come across the name, Aquila?
The Clifton House School magazine was called Aquila.
Clifton was just around the corner from Norwood and Norwood's Company Secretary,
Charles Cowling, had a father whose name was (wait for it) Aquila Cowling.

Using Census records, I have been able to obtain a lot of information regarding Charlie's mother, Ruth Charlotte Prudames; amazingly, I have found that William Cass, Ruth's husband-to-be, was at her home on the evening when the 1891 Census took place!
